Which Word Will Define Your 2019?

My favorite part about the new year is choosing my word! At the beginning of each year, I choose a word that I want to define my year. It’s a word that I choose to try to help keep me grounded and to help my make decision.

Here’s how it all started….

A couple years ago I listened to this podcast that gave the idea to choose one word that is your motto for the year. I loved the idea, but like most ideas I love, I forgot to actually follow through with it. A few days later, I went back to school from Christmas break for our full day in-service meetings. During the in-service, our principal Dr. Jones, had an activity for the entire staff. I’ll give you one guess as to what it was!

Yep! You guessed it.

Each staff member had to pick one word to define how they want the rest of their school year to go. I was pumped! Not only did I already love this idea, but now they were paying me to implement it. Right then and there I chose my first yearly word, VALUE.

I wanted to make sure that when I was making decisions, that those decisions would add some sort of value to my life. Though it didn’t work all the time, it was helpful to have that constant work reminder going through my head.

I became so obsessed with this idea of choosing a word for the year that I made every student, in all of my classes, choose a word for their year. Side note…I actually taught Spanish, so this had nothing to do with my curriculum, but I thought it was a good thing for every student. Since then, I have picked a different word each year. A few examples are the words value, simple, & kind. This year, I have chosen my most favorite word to date! Drum roll please!

My word for 2019 is HYGGE (pronounced "hoo-gah").

Hygge is a Danish and Norwegian word for a mood of coziness and comfortable conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment. It is also a word for being present and living in the moment.

There are so many ways to get hygge, but here are a few of my favorites!

  1. Turn on the fireplace.

  2. Light some (or a lot) of candles.

  3. Cuddle up with some warm, cozy throw blankets.

  4. Drink hot tea while reading a good book.

  5. Make your favorite warm soup.

  6. Snuggle with your loved ones.

  7. Put down your phone and have a meaningful conversation.

  8. Wear comfy pajamas.

  9. Drink a glass of wine by the fire. (I am doing this as I write 😉)

  10. Take a hot bubble bath.

I am so excited about this word that I even ordered a custom planner with it on the front! I thought this would be a great daily reminder to take time to create comfortable, cozy moments.
